Everything you need to know about microblading

I’ve always had sparse eyebrows.  It’s awful.  I would spend the majority of my makeup routine trying to perfect them.  So exhausting because I could never get them right.

The constant plucking, the over exaggerated arch and the constant battle to find the right color became such a chore.   I finally decided to take the plunge last year and started to research microblading.  At first, it was so overwhelming.  Everything I read freaked me out.  I’ve never done anything to my face and the whole idea was just too much for me.

The thought of something permanent or even semi-permanent on my face is scary!  What if it didn’t turn out?  What would I do then?  You can’t exactly hide your face.  Eyebrows are so important.  They can make or break your whole face IMO.  I looked at hundreds of before and after photos and it gave me a good idea of what I DID NOT want.  I know I didn’t want the eyebrows that looked super obvious or super dark.  I wanted something natural and subtle yet softly defined if that makes any sense.

I watched tons of videos, searched high and low for the right person and read one review after another.  Even after all my research, I was still skeptical.

I was exhausted and overwhelmed by all the information I was reading and almost gave up until I came across Pomi.  She has stellar reviews on Yelp.  To be honest, I’m not a fan of Yelp for a number of reasons which I won’t go into now however  I decided to reach out to her and ask her a few questions.  I don’t know why but after hearing back from her and looking on her website, my gut said she was the one.  She would be the one to touch my face and hopefully give me the eyebrows that I deserved!  It was a treat to myself after all the hell I went through last year.

Before we get into how this changed my morning routine and life in general….let me answer some common questions and concerns.

microblading before and after results asian eyebrows

What exactly is microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent tattooing technique that involves tiny, feather like strokes that are drawn onto the eyebrows with a hand tool.  The color (or pigment) is scratched into the upper layer of your skin unlike the traditional permanent makeup.

What is the cost of microblading?

Based on my research, the cost varies from each technician and can range from $500-$2000 depending on your location.  If you hate doing your eyebrows each morning, the cost is worth it.  Yes you can probably find someone to do it for much cheaper but be careful!  You get what you pay for (most of the time).  For me, it was worth the investment because let’s face it, brow products are NOT cheaper either but my time is worth even more especially being a mom.  Every single second during my morning routine can make or break my whole day.

Is microblading safe?

This was one of my biggest concerns.  Anything to do with cutting into my skin or any type of anything on my face, safety is obviously a priority.   Microblading is safe when done by someone licensed and trained.  Make sure to do your research and ask a lot of questions.

How long does the procedure take?

Typically the procedure takes about an hour.

How long does it take to heal?

Microblading takes about 1-2 weeks to heal however it takes about 4-6 weeks to see the final result.

What is the aftercare process?

First and foremost, TRUST THE PROCESS and DO NOT FREAK OUT.  Immediately after the procedure, your eyebrows will look very sharp and dark.  Again do not freak out or worry.  This is completely normal and part of the process.  The color will gradually soften.  With this being said, aftercare is KEY to your healing process.  It’s best that you do not touch your eyebrows with your fingers.  Before showering, you need to apply antibiotic ointment (usually provided by your technician) or vaseline 3x a day with a q-tip until the procedure area is healed.  It’s advised that you do not wear make-up, have sun exposure, go into a sauna, Jacuzzi or swim for 7 days.  Do not rub or traumatize the procedure area no matter how tempted you are.  I went as far as even wearing a shower cap over my head and eyebrows when I took showers.  I looked like a crazy person but I was NOT willing to chance anything.  It’s extreme but you can never be too careful.

Is microblading painful?

Shockingly microblading is NOT painful.  Numbing cream is put on the area prior to the procedure and you don’t really feel anything.  Make sure to communicate with your technician if you feel any type of discomfort.

How long does microblading last?

Microblading can last anywhere between 1-3 years.  You typically should go back for an annual touch up.  Also keep in mind that microblading  is a TWO STEP process.  There is a touch-up appointment approximately 4 weeks after your initial appointment.  At your touch-up appointment, she will fill in any missing hairs, add color or make hairs longer to achieve the best result.

Am I happy with my results?

100% YES.  It has been life changing to say the least.  I love the shape and color so much.  It’s better than what I had hoped for and most importantly it looks natural.  This has cut down my morning routine by  at least 15-20 minutes.  That may not sound like much time but it is EVERYTHING when you have kids or if time is not on your hands.  I’m due for my annual touch up appointment but it will have to wait until I’m not pregnant and done nursing.

  1. Thank you for this. I have long been curious and your brows look amazing! Can you share about breast augmentation? So many questions there too.

  2. They look awesome!! And, very natural. I can so relate- my eyebrows have always been super thin & sparse. I dread filling them in, and I’m a makeup artist. Haha
Thanks for your review!! I might do it after I’m done nursing. In my 3rd trimester now. 🙂
    Xo,Danielle

    • Hi Danielle! haha I hear you! I would spend so much time every single damn day filling them in and they looked decent but now looking back after microblading, they were a hot mess. Yay congrats and me too – will get my touch up after nursing too!

  3. I have no eyebrows at all …. why doesn’t my micro blade take? It’s nice for a week then it really fades and flakes off? Please help!

      • It also depends on your skin type. If you have oily skin, the pigments may not take so you have to take extra precautions like blotting your face for 1-2 months while your brows heal, esp. near your eyebrows and potentially doing touch ups more frequently (every 6-9 months). It took me about 2 touch ups to get my brows looking great for 12 months.

  4. All the concerns in this article was as if I wrote it myself. Last year i made the mistake to go cheap when i got my income tax. I was so ashamed. It didn’t take. I still have to fill in. I was in so much pain. She applied cream but it never numbed me. I would love to do it over but now i would have to wait till next income tax year. Hope you keep posting. I think i can trust you.
