Length Really Does Matter: H & M Camel Pencil Skirt After Alterations

Being petite, the hem on most items (skirts, pants) always need to be altered, at least for me. I finally got my H & M camel skirt back fro my tailor and wanted to show you how much the length of a skirt makes a difference!
AFTER alterations:

Top: LOFT Ruffle Top – size XXSP (similar HERE)
Skirt: H & M Camel Skirt- size 2 (hem altered) (similar HERE)
Shoes: Ann Taylor Porcini Pumps- size 5 (similar HERE)
BEFORE alterations:
**sorry for the wrinkles**
Sweater: J.Crew Merino Placket Cardi- size XXS (buy HERE)
Shoes: Aldo Brown Pumps- size 5/35 (buy HERE)
This length (before alterations) obviously was way too long and is NOT  proportional to my petite frame.
This is totally random, but I am ANXIOUSLY waiting for these lizard peep toe pumps in pumice stone to go on sale in a size 5. So please keep your eyes out for me:) I lost a ton of money on my granite suede pumps and had to sell them because they were too big BUT my AT porcini pumps fit decent – not perfect but do-able. I do not have luck with Ann Taylor pumps but these are so cute and much better than my Nine West nude peep toes.

Top: J.Crew Cascading Flutter Shell in platoon- size XXS (buy HERE)
Sweater: LOFT Front Pocket Cardi (buy HERE)
Just taking up the hem a few inches makes such a HUGE difference! It makes the silhouette of the skirt much more appealing and fitted. It was $25 to tailor which is steep considering there is no lining and no special modifications.

If I remember correctly, the total length of the skirt is 20″ which is exactly 1/2 of the length from my natural waist to the floor. 20″ hits right above the knee. I think if I wasn’t in the business world, I would have gone a bit higher but I need to keep a conservative length for the office.
Can you tell the difference in length? Do you think I took it up enough?

  1. New length is great, Annie. I love it. Yes, what a huge difference it makes. $25 is a lot. I'm still not used to the alteration price.

    Congrats to the new winner!

  2. Oh! I cannot wait to see the lizard pumps!

The skirt is a great length for work!

I love the green on you! Another great color for your skin tone!

  3. Big difference! Great length for you for sure!! I think tailoring costs vary quite a bit per location. This was definitely worth it, you're going to get tons of wear out of this versatile skirt!

  4. The length looks perfect! Why did it cost so much to alter…if there is no lining that seems like a pretty basic alteration

  5. What a difference a few inches makes. The after length is perfect on you. Do you live near a major city? I find alterations to be expensive where I live too 🙁

  6. @Tara My skirts have always costed this much so I never questioned it but man- it's like another skirt! LOL It is totally a basic alteration so I may have to question it- if it was lined, I understand but geez!

  7. Wow – can't believe how big of a difference it makes! It looks much better at this length than pre-alterations – it helps that you have gorgeous legs 🙂

  8. you look great, i love that blue shade on you! and i think the skirt is just the right length, short enough to show off your great legs, but not to short that it screams "hoochie" 😛 not that anything you wear would ever do that!
oh and your pictures look great, so crisp and clear!

  9. The skirt post-alterations is the perfect lenth and suitable for the office. I also really live that olive green color against your skin — super flattering!!

  10. The skirt fits you perfectly after the alterations. I can't believe it costs $25 bucks just to shorten the length. I have the exact same skirt and I do think it's a little long on me too. My Mom can take up the hem for me (about an inch) for free 🙂 Hopefully, you'll be wearing this skirt a lot.

  11. Do you own any J.Crew suits? I know we're about the same size, and I just ordered a Wool crepe blazer. I'm eager to know if it fits well/looks good on a petite!

Also, LOVE the front pocket cardi & the flutter sleeve top! Both look great on you!

  12. this is a great new length! i remember it looked weird on me too because it was too long. love the second photo!

  13. after alteration is much better, especially for pencil skirts, I'm more of a fan when I can see the knee caps. haha that reminds me back when I went to church they use to say "your skirt MUST touch the ground when you kneel down" to us on how we should dress for church dances…
