Petite Tailoring: Alterations On LOFT 100% Silk Skirt

I have been waiting and waiting to get my two LOFT silk drape skirts tailored. It’s been so long! I finally had time to go to my tailor and boy was it expensive! For 2 skirts and 2 pairs of pants, I almost fainted at the price! The tailoring was more than what the items cost! The price we have to pay to be petite. I got both of these skirts for $9.88 on final sale during LOFT’s massive sale awhile back. I scooped up both in a 00P for such an amazing price so even after alteration costs, it comes out to be about $40 per skirt. Not bad for 100% silk.

I had to take in the waist and sides. Here is a before pic of it sitting on my low waist. At first, I thought I could get away with it and attempted to wear it to work and it just did NOT look right. I couldn’t tuck anything in and the back of the skirt looked horrid. The skirt- un-altered hangs way too low and looks very strange.  It needs to sit were my natural waist is – up where my belly button is.

Here you can see how large the waist really is when it sits up where it should….just terribly large. It needed to come in at least 2 inches.
I was afraid with the pockets and draping detail and this skirt being 100% silk, that by altering it- it would ruin but my tailor is fantastic so I knew he would make it perfect.
By tailoring this skirt to sit on my natural waist, it brings up the hemline by a couple of inches which I think looks much better. The waist is snug but enough room to eat a big meal and still be able to breathe comfortably (which is important).
Overall, I am happy with the alterations! It fits so much better and definitely worth the $9.88 plus alteration costs! I have this same skirt in navy blue which I am sure will be making it’s appearance soon:) Thoughts on this skirt? Did my tailor do a good job?

Shoes: Do They Make The Outfit?

  1. Great tailoring job! Nice details on the skirt and silk to boot…Is the top new too? We have a dept store The Bay that carries some Inc and Style but the choices for fall is pathetic (just checked two days ago) and I didn't see that top either.

  2. Thanks ladies!!!! I think my tailor did a great job too!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

@Canadianpetite- I bought this top at Macy's last year so it's old…but I loved it so much that I got it in green, piink and black! And better yet- got on sale for like $9!!!!

  3. The skirt sure looks fabulous on you after alteration but boy, the cost was painful. At least you got it pretty cheap. I refused to pay for alterations. I either don't buy things that don't fit or my Mom will fit them for me ๐Ÿ™‚ It doesn't make sense to me that the cost of alteration is much higher than the clothing itself.

  4. Oh, so this is what the skirt is supposed to look like! I thought I had the same skirt but I bought mine at Ann Taylor. I didn't alter it though, just folded it up 3x. LOL. It looks really great on you!

  5. i love that skirt on you. its so pretty and the color is nice too. your alteration person did a great job and didn't charge you an arm and a leg! heehee.

  6. He definitely did a good job! Oh, what would we do without our tailors. And that's a Loft 00P? You must be lilliputian!

  7. LOL i agree with you on the tailoring, we have to pay a price for being so small! I bought my own sewing machine but there are still stuff I can't fix myself ๐Ÿ™

  8. Omg, $40 for a tailoring job is insane! I had a silk (I think) skirt from AT tailored as well for about $25 and I thought that was expensive! They took in fabric from the side near the zipper I believe. Is that what they did with yours?

  9. do you ever take a bad photo? i swear, you always look so sophisticated and chic…plus you have a hot body! i am so jealous ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Wow, they did a great job! It fits you perfectly now! And I agree with you that by pulling it up a couple inches it actually looks better. I've never taken something to be altered, so I'm so shocked at the price! But, for something that looks and fits as good as that on you, $40 is a pretty good price!

  11. Cee — the alterations must have cost about $30 per skirt, because $40 per skirt includes the price the skirt itself. That's definitely within normal market alteration prices for taking in both the sides and the waist. The drape after alterations is perfect.

  12. Your tailor did a great job! Definitely worth the money, I imagine silk would be difficult to get right. I have to laugh because I tried on the 00p in that skirt too and it was just a smidge tight Lol!! I'm sure you'll get tons of wear from those skirts too since the colors are wonderful neutrals.

  13. @SugarNikita- what state are you in? email me and we can talk about my tailor ๐Ÿ™‚

@Cee- I know the alterations were expensive but I figured I got the skirt for $10 plus $30 in tailoring costs which makes the skirt $40 out the door…not bad for a 100% silk skirt right? ๐Ÿ™‚ I believe they did take it in from the side of the zipper.

@Jen- yes silk is very tricky to tailor so I was a bit nervous but super thrilled that it came out nicely:)

@S- makes a big difference when it sits where my natural waist is huh? I agree with you! And you are lucky not having anything altered- its expensive!

@Callandra- LOL…I think I will get tons of wear off of both skirts too!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I love this look! Yikes, sorry to hear about the hefty tailoring price:( but it looks great! I love how the pink top looks against the gray:)
