War of the Coats: LOFT Wool Swing Coat vs. H & M Belted Coat

Please help! I cannot decide between these two coats. I got my LOFT wool swing coat in melange blue and in XXSP but then I found this houndstooth petite friendly coat last Sunday at H & M. Why oh why would I try it on and have to like it? So I was forced to get it…
Coat: H & M Belted Wool Coat- size 2
Jeans: Gap Legging Jeans– size 00P (buy HERE) (also got in TRUE BLACK)
Shoes: Ann Taylor Porcini Pumps- size 5 (walrus color HERE)
Ann Taylor and LOFT are having a 30% off Friends and Family sale starting on 11/16-11/21 which I know we have all heard about:) Click here to sign up for EBATES for an additonal 3% back on each store (and yes I will get credit if you sign up)! Click here if you want the AT/LOFT coupon.

I really like this H & M wool blend coat because it’s not too heavy for me. I don’t like heavy coats especially since it’s unecessary for where I live. But I do need coats since it does get really chilly at night and I always run colder.

I love the whole concept of a belted coat but am I really going to take the time every single time I wear it to belt it? I am usually always on the run and if I grab a coat and throw it on, I usually don’t bother buttoning much less belting..LOL

But I have to say, the belt does make the coat quite cute…or am I just overly excited? The grey and white color and houndstooth print is what I love most. I don’t have anything like it and it’s just cute!
Here is the back of the coat…I am a little suspect about the pleather belt breaking- then what will I do? Price on this coat is $69.50! Ouch! For a H & M coat?

Yes I am wearing my GAP jeggings again! Love them! Cannot wait to get my true black wash too!

Ahh…I do love my Christian Louboutin pumps. Man were they expensive but sooo totally worth it! I wear it with everything! I told hubby if there really is a Santa Claus, a bone color pair of CL’s will be sitting under our tree this year..LOL I’m just kidding, I don’t want another pair (or do I?)- it’s too expensive. I will start with one for now:)

Thanks to ExtraPetite for trying it on when LOFT ran their $75 coat special, I was able to see it on a fellow petite since there were NO coats in my local LOFT for me to see. I usually don’t like buying things w/out trying it on first but luckily this one fit!

The quality is really nice- most LOFT items are:)

Here is the back of it- I love the cute band/button detail.

I love the unique color of melange blue but it seems more like a casual coat for me. Would I really wear it to work?

I am not sure what my deal is with coats since I really don’t get that much wear out of them but I sure like the idea of having them. I live in warm climate but the winters do get cold  so how many coats do I really need?

Would it be wrong for me to keep both? This is a total random thought but I just noticed that piece of paper on the ground in the background- what the heck is that?
Here is a Wool fushcia double breasted coat from GAP I bought last year and literally have worn once or twice. The size is XSP so if anyone is interested, I will be posting on my blog sale. The sleeves fit perfectly!  I have been neglecting my blog sale because I haven’t had time to post any new items.

This lovely orange coat is from F21 – believe it or not! Doesn’t look like F21 does it? I bought it last winter for $30 or $40 and get tons of compliments everytime I wear it. Orange is definitely outside my comfort zone but I think its super pretty. I was just about to put it up for sale until I took these pics and now I have changed my mind….hehehehe

Forever 21 has its issues but I did try on some coats recently and really loved this classical tweed coat. It fit really nicely but the sleeves are a bit too long- I am starting to see a trend in coat sleeves always being too long for me. I also really liked this grey cropped trench coat. Both were super adorable on but since, I already have these two news ones I am debating on, I had to pass up but now I am kind of regretting it..LOL
Here is a quick video to show you both coats on. Since pictures are one dimensional, this gives you a good frame of reference. Also- I compared both coats quality, price and fit!
HELP me decide! Keep both, return one or return both?

  1. my favourite is the pink one! hehe keep the one that you think you'll wear the most. i thought that i was blowing a good $50 on my trench but i wear it absolutely every day and so value per wear is pretty good. i think the solid colours go with more outfits and therefore are more versatile

  2. i actually really love the H&M coat. it looks so much more fitted on you and flatters your figure more. in comparison, the ATL coat actually looks a little boxy.

and that F21 orange coat is super cute!! the fit is almost perfect and the color is gorgeous on you!

great reviews! and loved the video. 🙂

  3. Out of all the coats that you posted, I think the H&M houndstooth one fits you the best. Everything is kind of shapeless and boxy and it hides your figure. If I had to choose, I'd keep the H&M one and sell the rest. One great coat is better than several ok coats. =)

  4. I prefer the H&M coat for your shape. The gray ATL looks so shapeless on you. Love the pink color of the gap and guess what?! I have that orange F21 coat too!! I love mine, but I see we have the same problem with the sleeves being slightly long on it. I wouldn't worry about the belt on the H&M coat cracking. You could always switch it out for one of your nice leather belts…..or you could add a pop of color belt when you're outfit needs one! One thing I notice is that your coats are double breasted. Since you've been so beautifully endowed, I'd probably steer away from double breated in the future and especially ones that button so high on you like the gap one, it's such a pretty color for your skin tone, but it doesn't button low enough to flatter your gorgeous figure!

  5. The LOFT coat looks a tad big on you, so I say keep the H&M one! The print is different and you sound like you love it. It fits you amazingly. Even if the belt breaks in the future, I'm sure you can substitute it with any skinny belt, maybe eve in a color other than black.

  6. I agreed with everyone. I think the H&M coat fits you the best. I saw it in store but didn't bother to try it on. It looks way better on you than on the hanger. I had a chance to order the LOFT swing coat when they had the $75 promotion but I didn't get it. I don't think it flatters on petites at all. So I think you should keep the H&M coat and return the LOFT one

  7. I like the H&M coat on you. I do not like the LOFT coat. 🙁 After all that, I know it's hard to let it go, but I think the H&M one is a sure winner.

  8. I'd go with H&M coat. It fits perfectly and looks so cute on you. I like the color of Loft and Gap coats, but they seems too big for you.
oh I adore almost every pair of CL pumps. It can only be on my wishlist though for now. 🙂

  9. I think the H&M coat fits nicely on you. I have tried that on the same coat and like the fit as well. I didn't like the material though and the belt looked a little cheap in person, but I guess you can always trade it out with your own belt. The material of the Loft jacket looks nice, but I agree with you that I'm not crazy about the big buttons. I'd return the Loft for sure.

  10. How bad are your fall and winters? Are those coats warm enough? : )

I think the belt makes the first coat cute and feminine, but honestly, belts on coats are such a hassle. I try to avoid it at all costs! The second coat seems kind of boxy on you and would probably look better if it was more fitted. I actually think the last orange coat looks FANTASTIC on you!

I say return both and find a new one, but if I HAD to choose out of the two coats, I'd say keep the H&M one..the negative part about it is the belt anyway. : ) And it looks amazing on you!

  11. O M G! I just bought the h&m jacket this past weekend and have gotten SO many compliments everywhere I go!! I also got it in size 2. You should totally keep the H&M! It's $69 but it is so timeless – I absolutely love it! And the color is like black, creme, light grey… so unique and looks so expensive!!

The other jackets look a little bit on you.

  12. The ATL is similar to coats the grey and pink Gap ones that you already own so if you can live with the belt-thing, you should keep the H&M because it looks like it was made for you. I love the F21 trench and would look so chic on you but are your winters really that warm?

  13. I vote to keep the H&M coat and return the ATL one. In the mean time, maybe keep an eye out for a similar coat that doesn't require a belt to flatter your figure. =)

  14. I really, really like the H&M coat! I think if you rarely wear coats, you can force yourself to belt it! 🙂 The ATL one is also really cute but if you have something that works for a fraction of the price, it might not be worth keeping.

PS: I am bummed that your orange one isn't for sale! Not that it would fit me, anyway, but still 🙂

  15. Oh. I'm dumb! I didn't see $69.50 – I saw $29.50! In that case, I think the H&M coat is a bit absurdly priced, unless it's super good quality and exactly what you want, I'd return it!

Sorry to give conflicting messages – lol!

  16. I really like the H&M coat on you more! I saw the LOFT one in store and I really dont like the color, but it is better for layering with sweaters. I say keep both if you cant choose! 🙂 you can always sell one later on!

check out my new petite blog! just made it today 🙂 now following you!

  17. I think the first and the fourth coats really compliment your body. Very cute too. The rest seem pretty baggy to me but you may add a belt.

  18. Ooh the orange one is actually my fav! The swing coat looks good for comfort. The jeggings look fantastic!

  19. In my opinion…
The houndstooth coat looks adorable on you! I would definitely keep it and have the sleeves shortened to what's comfortable for you. I would return the Loft coat. You and I are the exact same height and weight and when I tried it on in the store, I felt it looked boxy on me. I think the pink Gap coat is really cute on you. The sleeve length is perfect, I would just belt it so that it shows off your figure. However, if you decide to sell it, I might be interested in purchasing it! hehe. The orange coat is really cute on you too and you don't even need a belt. I would have the sleeves shortened just a bit, otherwise it's adorable! 🙂

  20. @Cee

The LOFT coat is a bit big on the bottom area which sucks because the quality is awesome! You are right- I can always replace the black belt for a different one:)

  21. I prefer the black and white coat on you over the LOFT one….I think the fit is more flattering. I also love that orange coat you are wearing…F21? Who would have thought!

  22. That H&M coat is soo cute on you! I love the houndstooth print and the skinny belt. If the belt does wind up breaking, can you switch it out for another skinny belt? Also love the fuchsia and orange colors on you! You have the perfect type of skin tone that looks great with virtually every color but is stunning with bright ones. Can't believe the orange coat is from F21, the fit is absolutely perfect.

  23. I love both coats. The H&M is dressier and the Ann Taylor LOFT is a bit more casual. If you're only going to keep one, I'd keep the H&M.

I love the Gap and Forever XXI coats too! Too bad the pink is a bit too small for me.

  24. I like reading your site because you can always bring us fresh and cool things, I feel that I should at least say a thank you for your hard work.
