Review: Steve Madden Flat Leather Boots (need help deciding)

Yes, I am still on the hunt for some flat leather boots. Nothing seems to be right. I have tried Banana Republic suede boots and even Cole Haan leather riding boots (on major sale in brown/black) and neither worked out. The Cole Haan liberty boots never made it to a post because it just wasn’t even worth it- way to masculine and heavy for me. So on a whim, I decided to test these Steve Madden boots out for size.

Jacket: Theory Khaki Blazer- size 00
Jeans: GAP Leggings in faded dark wash– size 00P (buy here)
Boots: Steve Madden Candence– size 5 (buy here)
FIT: I got a size 5 and it fits pretty nicely with socks. Still a bit roomy in the ankle area even with thick socks but definitely better fit than the Cole Haan Liberty boots. The shaft height is 15″ and calf circumference is also 15″. It’s not as tall and large as most boots I have tried. The circumference is large enough to tuck in skinny jeans which I like.

Style: The style is a slouchy pull-on leather boot. Has no zippers but a slit in the back top to make it easy to pull on and off.
Comfort: I haven’t worn these out yet because I am still debating on whether or not to keep them. But from what I can tell just by walking around my house and how nice they feel when slipping my feet thru, it actually feels really comfortable.

Material: The leather is actually super soft. I was quite shocked!
Color: The color is supposed to be a cognac but it’s more of a really light beige? I was hoping for a rich cognac color. This was really disappointing to me. I wonder if the Steve Madden Intyce cognac color is better? I was debating between these two styles. Hum…

Material: The leather is actually super soft. I was quite shocked!
Heel: There is 1/2″ heel which is really nice because I’m not a big fan of completely flat shoes/boots. Even though there is a tiny heel, you can’t tell and it’s very easy to walk in.
Price: $99.95- OUCH. For Steve Madden’s? A bit steep for me but I am willing to pay it if it was the right cognac color.
VERDICT: I love everything except the color. It seems a bit light.

What do you think? Keep or return?

  1. the boots look really nice but i think the color is a little too light. the style and fit look great, but it all depends on if you'll love it because of the color. i actually have the Intyce boots and they're ok. they're a little wide in the calf (even after adjusting to the smallest belt settings, but they're super comfortable and i love the cognac color.

  2. I like the color and they look good on you from the photos. Something different than black or gray. Just got back to blogging and noticed your curly hair, you look cute. I just got my hair colored and permed while in Bangkok a few days ago, what a coincidence!

  3. Annie I'm sure about this since I'm so used to seeing you in heels. Whoa, you look so different with your hair! It's so voluminous, love it!

  4. I think these are great! I love the slouching and the backs of them. I also love the heels!! Such a cute cowboy-ish look!! But if they are not the color you are looking for, then they need to go back. Have you tried looking on Piperlime?

And, of course, your hair is lovely! So neat to see it curly!

  5. The boots definitely look good on you, there's no denying that! I actually own the same exact pair. I had been on a hunt for cognac colored boots and was a tiny bit disappointed by the color, but I figure for the comfort and the style that I love so much, I'd be willing to semi-settle. I just wanted to let you know that these are NOT rain appropriate whatsoever. I in my clumsiness got grease stains on them, which I haven't tried removing yet, but when I tried wiping it off with water initially, the leather darkened. Oh, the water dries and it's back to looking normal, but before it tries, it doesn't look pretty. I've never had any leather shoes that were not black, so maybe this is common knowledge though. =P I say, if you're not happy with the color, maybe return? I understand what you mean by the color though as it wasn't the color we were looking for. They're comfortable though! =)

  6. i think that they are fabulous! at least it's a color that you can still match lots of things with, not like they only had royal blue or red boots, lol. these are still neutral, great looking, and comfy. keepers!

  7. I love everything about these boots, but I wish they were a bit darker for sure!….It might be nice to have these and some darker cognac boots in your closet, but if it's one or the other, I'd hold out for a darker pair πŸ˜‰

  8. i like them…they look great and seem to fit well and you can still buy the cognac if you find a pair you like in the future…

  9. I really like the colour but I can see how "cognac" can be misleading! Yay, finally seeing a better picture of the hair – love it! Curly hair totally suits you – perhaps we should trade? πŸ˜‰

  10. you look adorable, I love the curly hair and the casual outfit!

I think that the boots are super cute but I'm with you on your apprehension of the color. Darn, I hate it when that happens when everything is good except for the one major thing like color! I think if you keep them when you pull them out to wear them you'll always think "I wish these were darker" know what I mean? I've totally done that before and then I don't get enough wear out of the item.

  11. Annie, your hair!! Did you get a perm?

I agree with all the misgivings you've mentioned. So I'd recommend trying out the Intyce, as that's one pair of boots that I've seen on a ton of bloggers. If a lot of people have it, then it must have a lot of positives right? I'm pretty sure they have a cognac color too.

  12. OMG i loooove your hair like that!!! what did you do? it looks amazing!
as for the boots, i like the shape and they look great on you, but im not really partial to the color…but maybe that's only because i tend to go for darker colors πŸ˜›

  13. The boots look like they fit you perfectly, but they are definitley not cognac! You would think the same company could get their act together and have all of their cognac shoes the same color! I have the SM Intcye, and the color is definitley a true cognac and much more versatile than I think the color of these would be! Oh, and your hair looks gorgeous by the way πŸ™‚ Its nice to change it up every once in awhile!

  14. I own the Intyce boots in the cognac color, and they are definitely richer. It's possible you received the wrong pair, if Steve Madden goes by the same color codes for all their boots.

For what it's worth, I really love my Frye Melissa Button boots (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/frye-melissa-button-boot/3033602). The picture doesn't do the color justice — it's more of a true, rich cognac in person. They hit at a good height for my short self (and I know from your posts on the AN forum that we are similar in size). Worth the investment, and more so than the Steve Maddens, in my opinion.

  15. I have to agree with your readers and with you that the color just seems a little too light. It makes it look cheap which is not what Steve Madden is! The fit looks alright, I'm also not a huge fan of how slouchy it is. I hope you get to find a better pair of boots, it will be worth it in the end I'm sure.

  16. I really like the fit and I can't even tell if there is a gap at the calves (which is why I like slouchy boots). If you don't love the color, maybe buy the black ones? You can pair it more univerally with leggings or black jeans. I tried on the Intyce boot ages ago…shaft was too long and lots of room in the calves. FYI, i'm about your height and weight. I might look around for these boots in size 4! Thanks Annie!

  17. Too light in colour. With use, it might start slouching more because the leather is so soft (as you said). On another note, is your hair naturally wavy? It's good like that.

  18. @WendyHi Wendy! Thx for your input- I was about to settle for comfort over color if the price was cheaper..but for $100..I just can't settle. I will always want a diff color:)

  19. @CeeLOL No I didn't get a perm..hehehe I just waved it with a 3 barrel waver curling iron. I was going to try the Intyce but I think I may just wait it out maybe for next year:)

  20. @LianaAwe..thx Liana! I waved it with a curling iron (3 barrel)…I don't do it often cuz it's so bad for my hair- it's like burning it:( Yeah I agree- color is not dark enough!

  21. Good call on returning them. The price is a bit too steep for Steve Madden. And you're so lucky that your hair is naturally straight!

  22. I'm not sure about the boots (I'm not really a fan of flat boots), but I LOVE your hair wavy!

  23. I say go for the Intyce boots in cognac! I've been searching for these in my size to no avail. I currently have the Guess Town boots (as seen here: http://www.shoes.com/productimages/shoes_iaec1172894.jpg) and the color is so versatile! I'm looking for the Intyce boots for when these fall apart because that's how much I wear them. I literally wear it with any color combination, even when it doesn't seem to "match" it just works somehow. It also goes with a ton of different outfits – jeans, skirts, shorts, etc. Good luck! πŸ™‚

So sad that we petite Canadians don't have access to Loft or Ann Taylor. I would buy that shell in every color. On the brighter side, I *just* ordered that exact J.Crew cardigan and I can't wait for it to come in. All you petite bloggers are making me want to start my own blog and come out of hiding ;P

  24. J, here again – Just realized that I got ahead of myself. The shell I was referring to was the AT ruffle shell you referred to in your most recent shopping post. Also, I meant Guess Towny* boots. Sorry, my brain is still in long-weekend mode πŸ™‚

  25. I think they look nice on you. I’ve been looking at getting these but I’m worried my calves aren’t big enough lol. What did you decide?

  26. You really make it seem really easy together with your presentation however I find this topic to
be actually something which I feel I might by no means understand.
It seems too complicated and very extensive for me. I’m looking forward to your
next publish, I will try to get the hang of it!

  27. I’m not sure exactly why but this blog is loading very
slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a
problem on my end? I’ll check back later and see if
    the problem still exists.

  28. What i do not understood is if truth be told how you’re no longer actually a lot more well-appreciated than you might be
now. You are so intelligent. You understand therefore
considerably on the subject of this subject, made me
individually believe it from numerous varied angles.
Its like men and women are not interested unless it’s one thing to accomplish with Lady gaga!
Your personal stuffs great. Always care for it up!

  29. Hey there this is kind of of off topic but I was
wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have
to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to
get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
