Review: J Brand Mercury Gray Skinny Jeans- size 23

IMG_5084.jpg

Top: Ann Taylor factory shell- size XXSP
Blazer: Theory “Gratian” Conversation – size 0
Jeans: J Brand – size 23 (similar J Brand)
I was so excited the other week when Hautelook had J Brand jeans in size 22, 23 and 24. I didn’t even hesitate and ordered these adorable gray skinnies. I’ve always wanted this color ever since Gap came out with them in the famous legging jeans but they were always out of my size.  And I’ve been drooling over them on Wendy.
SIZE/FIT: Waist: 12″ laying flat across. Inseam is 29″.  The waist fits snug and no waist gap! Woo hoo! The thighs are very snug (but not uncomfortable), a bit too snug for my taste.
COLOR: Mercury- light gray. It’s very 80’s but I like it because it’s neutral and will go with a lot more than colored jeans.
MATERIAL: It’s softer than your typical denim and has a lot of stretch which makes it comfortable. 92% cotton, 7% polyester, 1% spandex.
QUALITY: It seems to be well made. Compared them to my GAP legging jeans and they are comparable in quality. All the stitching was nicely done. The one downfall to J Brand jeans is usually the large back pockets but I think these seem to be okay.
PRICE: $79 on Hautelook but normally retails for over $200 ( a bit steep even at $79)

VERDICT: Unsure….I like them but will I really wear them? I am leaning more towards returning.
What are your thoughts on these jeans?

  1. I would like to love these jeans on you. Somehow they do not compliment your curves especially in the front view (side and back look good). You look really curvy in all other outfits but these jeans just don't do the same. Perhaps you can try and experiment pairing with longer blazer or different blouse? I like the got over all though.

  2. ugh. I'm returning my haute look purchases. I ordered a 24 white bells, I could barely breathe when I got them buttoned. 23s are coming in the mail today, but I doubt I'm going to even try. They grey J's look good on you, good length too., but I think it's too casual a vibe. I'd return.

  3. Ohhh!! I love gray jeans!! Wendy has me lusting for some, too!! I say keep! It is so fun to have a different piece to play with in your closet! I think they look great on you!!

  4. Ooooo, I love the outfit, but if you are not completely comfortable in them, then I'd say, return! But you never know, if you do keep them, they might become favs 😉

    Kitty x

  5. i like the jeans, but i think they're meant to be paired more casually. a loose, over-sized white tee shirt, scarf, and a a cropped leather jacket would look great with those jeans 🙂

the theory blazer and tucked in pink tank doesn't work, because it all looks to formal and fussy with the skinnies.

were there any cobalt blue j brands on haute look? i love wendy's bright colored skinnies.

  6. you actually look good in light jeans! envyyyy. these jeans are super tiny wow. you should return if you don't LOVE them! they are pretty pricey. also, fall means darker colours, so darker wash may be a better investment!

  7. i still love the gratian blazer! i just saw a size 0 on ebay, but if that's the size you are wearing in this post i know it'd be too small for me! i like these jeans on you, but i think you look even better in the gap legging from yesterday's post. 🙂

  8. Hmm, I think a slightly darker shade of gray would be better? If you don't absolutely love them, I say return. And I agree with Sydney that the fit of the Gap leggings seem better.

  9. i ordered size 23 J. Brand jeans too off Gilt Group last year and they were definitely too long on me. i didn't get them altered just cause i almost always tucked them into boots but will need to alter them this year. it looks like yours run a little bit long too. i would say that if you do keep, maybe consider altering them a little shorter? it also really depends on how often you wear them… i do think you look better in your Gap legging jeans. 🙂

    cute & little

  10. Why wasn't my comment posted? It was just suggestions about how to wear the jeans…It was nice and not mean at all. But I guess I don't like how comments are moderated/censored. You lost a reader.

  11. @a.b. hi a.b.! Your comment is posted:) Sometimes when they come thru on my phone, I don't publish them until I have time. I didn't think your comment was mean at all- in fact I really appreciated it! I'm sorry you no longer want to read my blog:( I was forced to moderate my comments (trust me- i don't like to) due to some crazy comments but suggestions like hrs always appreciated!!!

  12. Ditto outfit suggestions by a.b. and Olyvia. The wash and color makes this pair of jeans more casual than dressy.

I do like the fit on you overall. You mentioned the thigh area is kind of tight… and I'm wondering if that would stretch out with wear?

I haven't bought from Hautelook in awhile b/c returns are a hassle for me. If they still offer free returns, I would say go for that. Otherwise, I'd walk around the closet holding up these jeans to see if you can make outfits work. Good luck, Annie!

  13. 1. I'm not a fan of jbrands in general, esp their butt pockets. They do nothing for you. Actually, bc it's so big AND wide, flattens your booty out.

    2. wash is fine. you just can't pair it w/that top & the Theory blazer. doesn't go, but would probably be better w/that casual outfit you posted the other day.

    3. length is a tad bit long. i dont mind. i like scrunch at the bottom. you can always cuff them outward. I actually think ppl rolling them in trying to hide the length is weird. just get them tailored!

  14. OMG that a.b. girl's second comment made me laugh so hard (at her). Annie, she doesn't deserve to read a blog as fab as yours! I applaud the friendliness in your reply to her. I'm not sure I have the same attitude as you.

I actually love the wash of these jeans. I think the length is perfect because skinny jeans are supposed to have the little scrunch at the bottom (imo). It wouldn't be worth altering what looks like an inch of fabric. : )
