Review: J.Crew Minnie Pants vs. Cafe Capris

Top: Ann Taylor factory – size XXSP

Pants: Minnie pants in bi-stretch wool (heather caramel) – size 00P

Likes: I adore the heather caramel color. It’s the perfect shade and exactly what I have been looking for.  The fit is much better than I had anticipated and is slim through the hips and thighs. I am so happy it has belt loops! I tend to wear belts with everything and am annoyed that my Ann Taylor bi-stretch cropped pants have neither belt loops or pockets.

Dislikes: There are no side pockets but I can look past it since it has belt loops.  The description says that it has a rubber band-like stretch recovery so I am curious to see how it will wear throughout an entire work day of sitting and walking. I will keep you posted. There is a small waist gap but nothing a belt can’t fix.

Verdict: Keeping and thinking of getting the wild petunia and cabernet when it goes on further sale. I wish it came in Navy – desperately need a pair of navy dress pants. My search continues for the perfect pair of winter white and navy pants.

Cafe Carpis in wool (jade and navy) – size 00P
Likes: I didn’t know if I was going to like this teal/jade color but it’s actually a very pretty color. I got it on sale for $35 so I’m willing to make it work.  I like the tapered leg and cuff on the bottom and the belt loops/pockets are a plus.

Shirt: J.Crew – size 00 (buy HERE)
Blazer: H&M {old} – size 2
Belt: Ann Taylor in navy – size XS (buy HERE)
Shoes: Ann Taylor – size 5 (buy HERE)
Dislikes: The fit is far from perfect. The butt is very loose and baggy.  The thighs and torso need to be slimmed and tapered.  It’s unlined and may pose a problem if you have sensitive skin. I wore these pants for an entire work day and it didn’t bother me.  The length hits above the ankle on me because I have short legs (as reference- I’m 5 ft. tall).  I noticed on J.Crew’s website, it hits at a similar length on the model.  This is how all my cropped pants fit so I’ve learned to live with it.  I wore it to work yesterday (outfit above) and noticed that it does wrinkle easily after sitting for a long period of time.
Verdict: Keeping the jade (going to try to shrink), returning the navy

I also ordered the Edie attache in two tone and Edie purse in pecan but both were disappointing and going back.  I originally wanted the Edie attache in pecan but it was already sold out during the sale:(  I’m still debating on the Janey patent flats and will keep you posted on the fit/comfort.

All in all, I much prefer the fit of the Minnie pants over the cafe capris. They are more fitted and flattering for my figure. What are your thoughts?

  3. the minnie pants definitely look better on you, fit-wise. the cafe capris need some serious alterations! i dont know if i’d keep the cafe capris, even at $35, since you have to factor in the cost of alterations…

  5. Definitely like the Minnie pants more. The Minnie’s do come in Navy in the stretch twill fabric, but not the wool. I have the Minnes in black, navy & hunter green. All are in the stretch twill fabtic, but not the wool becuase I do have sensitive skin. They are by far the most flattering on us petite girls.

    Love your blog.

  7. Such a helpful review! Pants fit is so important as a petite…. thank you for the comparison!

  8. I love the camel pants on you! The neutral color looks very professional and will work with so much. Too bad the navy ones don’t fit better, but I’m sure you’ll find a pair soon. I love this style of pants, but I only have one pair (black.) I live in a cold snowy area and I feel like they only look good with heels – which isn’t always practical for work. Do you think that’s true – that they only work w/heels? Thanks for any advice, Annie!
