We’ve been building a new home since January of this year and boy has it been a long journey. Believe it or not, we still have quite a ways to go. There have been some major setbacks along the way. I cannot wait to move in and Miss Milan is going to have a heyday with these stairs (lol). This post is way overdue so here is a sneak peek of our new home!
This is when they first framed the stairs. My absolute favorite part of the home and one of the main reasons why we bought it.

I couldn’t get a decent shot because the front door wasn’t fully open but this was when they were just about to frame the stairs.

It’s taken almost a full year and we are still about 3 months away from closing. We are not building a custom home, this is through a builder so it’s semi-custom. I’ve always dreamed of building a custom home but as you know Southern California has no land and in order to do this, you have to tear an existing home down and build.
Buying through a builder has it’s perks because you don’t have to deal with contractors etc however there are many downsides. I feel like I’m compromising a lot on the upgrades because the options are so limited. The won’t allow certain finishes in the kitchen so I’m forced to choose something I’m not 100% happy with.
I typically would get everything standard and do all the upgrades after the close. That’s what we’ve always done in the past. It gives you exactly what you want without compromising not to mention how much money you save not going through the builder. Upgrades is where builders make the majority of their money because the mark up is insane. The downside to doing this is you have more construction done on your brand new home. I wouldn’t mind it but now that I have Milan, it just wouldn’t work time wise. I want everything done and brand new when we move in.
