As soon as I saw this tweed skirt suit online, I knew I had to have it. I  was doing some returns this past weekend and luckily was able to find both the blazer and skirt in-stores. It’s a brand new arrival so get it before it’s gone! I was shocked to see the price tag of both items and figured it must be really poorly made. Much to my surprise, the blazer and skirt are both fully lined and the quality is decent. The sleeves on the blazer is fully lined- my last two collarless blazers that were $49.95 did not have lining at the sleeves.

This skirt is super short and is not work appropriate. It may be possible to pair with some brown tights and get away with it for Fall/Winter depending on your work environment and dress codes. I like that I can wear both of these as separates. I was pretty excited that the skirt has pockets. The other downside (besides the length) is that there is an exposed zipper in the back. I think they were trying to play off the zipper detail from the side of the blazer but it doesn’t do anything for me. Luckily the length of the blazer covers it.

Measurements of blazer:
Shoulder to shoulder = 13″
Armpit to armpit = 14.5″
Waist = 12.5″
Original sleeve length = 22″ (shortened to 20.5″ and slimmed)
Total length = 22″

Skirt:
Waist = 12 1/4″
Length = 14″

I spent several pain staking hours yesterday slimming and shortening the sleeves. It was my first time slimming sleeves w/out my Mom’s supervision and I was extremely nervous.  Shortening of the sleeves doesn’t scare me as much as slimming – especially near the armpit area. I was willing to chance it on a $19.95 blazer. The first arm turned out perfectly but the second arm – you would think it  would be easier and faster but I ran into few issues. Maybe I was going cross eyed or losing patience…..nevertheless, I finally finished it!  Luckily it all worked out in the end. The most time consuming part is doing a a blind stitch (when the stitch doesn’t appear on the outside  of the sleeves) when shortening the lined sleeves.

Typically, I would have not paid for alterations on such a cheap blazer because it would have cost $25 to take up the sleeves and another $25-30 to slim the sleeves. I am so glad I am learning how to sew and am very grateful my mom recently taught me a few basics. For those of you who want to learn, I suggest you give it a try. I am not confident enough to do any tutorials but wanted to share with you my experience as a beginner sewer.

I also picked up this contrast blouse that I have been eying since the end of July. It finally hit stores but it does need minor alterations. It’s a high-low style but I’m wearing it tucked. I plan to slim the sleeves and sides.

On another note, I recently got another Rebecca Taylor dress and it fits perfectly. See a sneak peek here. This past weekend, hubby and I enjoyed some good food near the beach. We both love seafood and enjoyed these crab sliders, lobster rolls, lobster and shrimp quesadilla’s and then topped it off with some bread pudding with vanilla bean ice-cream.

I still can’t believe the price was so cheap – even for H&M.  Their blazers usually start at $34.95 and their other wool mini skirts from last season was at least $24.95.  All in all, I really like both the blazer and skirt and am looking forward to wearing them separately too. I am very happy with the results of the sleeve alterations and quite surprised I was able to complete it without ruining the blazer.
What are your thoughts on this suit?

  1. i like it a lot! i want that blazer now. if the skirt is too short for work, where do you see yourself wearing this suit instead?

      • It might be to short for me but it’s perfect for you. I saw this a few months ago at hm. Next time I see something like it, I’ll post for you. You look beautiful with or without tights. You have amazing legs btw. Im fairly tall, and used to have skinny legs. But I stopped training for 10 mile races because of my knee … Went from size 8 to a 14 on the bottom. Still look okay but have to wear a 25 or 26 inch suit skirt. Can wear as short as 23 with tights, but that’s the new limit. No more 21inchers for me!! Not if I want to keep my job.

    • I find the skirt too short for work standards as well, but I really like the outfit anyways. It’s so cute!

  3. I like the skirt suit quite a bit. I wish the skirt is a bit longer so it can be worn for work though. It’s great that you were able to do the alterations yourself. It must feel good to save the cost! You look great in it and I like your RM bag too. What a cute color.

    • Thanks Sky. Yeah I wish the skirt was longer too. It did feel quite amazing to accomplish the alterations myself. It was very time consuming so hopefully it won’t take as long next time….I need lots of practice:)

  7. This suit looks more expensive than what you paid and your self-alterations are so smart! I think the blazer will be very fun and versatile to wear as a jacket this fall. Save the skirt for when the hubby is around. πŸ˜‰

    I’m jaded by H&M quality but love it when you take the time to thoroughly review something that makes it worth my time to stop in store.

    xo,

    Jess

  9. I must be the only person who does like exposed zippers. πŸ™‚ haha I guess that’s who they make it for? As always, I love how you put this together!

  10. Wow, that suit looks great on you! I might have to check it out, although that skirt lenght is a no-go for me. Maybe if I bought one in a much bigger size and altered it for width…

  12. Hi, I’m also a petite girl who lives in Asia and totally enjoys your sense of fashion, sophisticated, modern and elegant, perfect for my age and work environment. Looking forward to your sharing of alternation skills!!

  14. Hi Annie,

    I was just wondering where you went for the delicious looking food; I’d like to try the restaurant if it’s in Southern California. πŸ™‚

  16. Great suit and so happy to hear it’s good quality for the price. I bet if I went tomorrow (I keep saying “I’m going tomorrow” ;)), it’d be gone! Nevertheless, love the alterations. GREAT job! And I like the pink detail inside the jacket. Nice to hear that it’s lined. I wonder why they made the skirt so short considering it must be super mini on regular-height ladies. Hmmm….

  18. I noticed you didn’t button the blazer. Did that seem tight to you? I know H&M stuff is small but based on the waist size you printed I am surprised how snugly the jacket fit when buttoned. My waist is my “biggest” area but it’s not big. I tried going up a size but it looked too big everywhere else. You’re right, though. It’s very nice for the price!

  20. I saw this outfit a few months ago at H&M. I guess that I’m a bit surprised that the skirt length was so short and that would be something you would like. Btw you look fabulously sexy in a 14″ skirt. And classy.

    If I see anything like it again I’ll stop by and post it. Personally, it would have been over the top for me plus i stopped running, went from a size 8 to a 14 on the bottom, and no longer have skinny legs. That’s what happens when you screw up a knee! I’m fairly tall so I don’t look bad. But I have to wear at least 25″ skirts. No more 21 or 23 inch skirts.
